1) The narrator speaks of the 3 ways she owes her existence to her mother.Identify the three ways and the literary techniques used to reveal them.
A: The first time was that was that her mom saved herself when falling in the circus. This show that if her mom died then the narrator would not have been born.
The second time she owed her life to her mother because when she went to see her father at the hospital she explained her how to read and which they got married and they brought her to life.
The third time was when her mother saved her from the burning house.
2) Interpret two times that flashbacks or foreshadowing are used in the story to build suspense and tension. Cite specific lines.
A: The author uses flashback in the story to build suspense and tension. In the story, the part when the house was burned , the daughter thinks about the figuratively leap . She thinks that by smelling the smoke it explains that the house needs to be renovated.
Also, the author uses foreshadowing to build suspense and tension. The quote that explains it is "lips that will never meet again". This foreshadows that her father is dead.
3) Draw conclusions about the relationship between the mother and daughter. How would you describe their relationship?
A: I think that her relationship is caring and strong. In the story. it demonstrates that although the house was on fire, her mother uses her confidence to go back to rescue her daughter. This tells me that she will do anything to help her daughter because she is important.
